RcrdLbl has the first mp3 from Heather Woods Broderick‘s (soon-to-be-released) debut album, which is called From the Ground. I’ve been looking forward to this album for a long, long time, and the wait seems worth it. Looks like the release date is 10/27 in the U.S.(???), at least that’s what Amazon says.

Either way, “Old Son” is a beautiful taste of the potential of this record. With both Heather and her brother Peter Broderick in front of and behind the microphones, there is undeniable magic here. Heather has a very specifically beautiful way of singing words and melodies over simple, sometimes melancholic chord structures. This song just builds and builds over its near five minutes, giving way to gorgeous violin, cello and xylo/glockenspiel scribbles as the outro. It’s just right.
